Is This Vacancy Genuine? A Professional Verification Checklist
Purpose-driven professionals are often eager to act quickly when they see a promising vacancy. That urgency can be exploited by impersonators, outdated listings and misleading recruitment messages. A short verification process protects your time, identity and money without slowing down a legitimate application.
Begin with the original source
Look for the vacancy on the employer’s official website, verified company page or recognised recruitment platform. If you first saw it in a repost or messaging group, trace it back to the original announcement. Check that the job title, location, deadline and application method match across sources.
Inspect the application destination
Legitimate employers usually use an official careers portal, a recognised applicant-tracking system or an organisational email domain. Treat free email addresses, shortened links and unfamiliar forms with extra caution. Before entering personal information, inspect the domain carefully for misspellings or added words designed to resemble a real organisation.
Verify the timeline
Confirm that the closing date has not passed and that the post itself is recent. Old vacancies are frequently reshared without context. If no deadline is given, check the official careers page or contact the organisation through contact details published on its own website.
Compare the role with the organisation
The vacancy should fit the organisation’s programmes, geography and normal hiring practices. Review its official website, recent posts and team information. A sudden recruitment drive for unrelated roles, unusually high compensation or vague responsibilities deserves further scrutiny.
Recognise financial red flags
A genuine employer should not ask a candidate to pay an application fee, security deposit, training charge or equipment cost as a condition of recruitment.
Be cautious about requests to buy gift cards, transfer money, receive funds on someone’s behalf or share banking credentials.
Limit sensitive information
A normal early-stage application may require your CV, cover letter and basic contact details. It should not require passwords, one-time codes, complete bank details or identity documents without a clear and legitimate reason. Share sensitive documents only when you understand why they are required, who will receive them and how they will be protected.
Check the recruiter’s identity
If an individual posts the vacancy, confirm that their current employment is connected to the hiring organisation. Look for consistent professional history and activity, but remember that a profile alone is not proof. When uncertain, use the organisation’s official contact channel to verify the person and the recruitment process.
Preserve evidence and report concerns
Keep copies of suspicious messages, links and payment requests. Report impersonation to the affected organisation and the platform where it appeared. If you have shared credentials, change them immediately and enable stronger account security.
EvitasJobs helps professionals discover opportunities but is not the recruiter unless explicitly stated. Always read the employer’s original vacancy notice and follow its official application instructions. A credible opportunity will withstand careful verification.
